The Doctors Blackwell: How Two Pioneering Sisters Brought Medicine to Women and Women to Medicine by Janice Nimura
This book follows the story of Elizabeth Blackwell, who believed from an early age, that she was destined for more than "ordinary" womanhood. At the end of the 19th century, Elizabeth became the first woman in America to receive an M.D. Soon after, she was joined by her younger sister, Emily, who proved an even brighter physician. Janice Nimura presents the many trials and tribulations of the Blackwell sisters, who together formed the New York Infirmary for Indigent Women and Children, the first hospital staffed entirely by women.
