The three gravel hill prairies owned by the Cary Park District – Sands Main Street Prairie, Hillside Prairie, and Water Tower Prairie – represent rare natural treasures within our region. Our speakers will discuss the human and natural history of these prairies – including volunteer involvement since the early 1990s; their rare plants; the important role gravel hill prairies have in aquifer recharge and general water quality; and the need for active volunteer participation to help remove invasive species and collect and spread native seed. The future for these prairies is hopeful, under the care of the newly formed Cary Prairie Stewards working with the Cary Park District. Opportunities to participate in this important work will be offered, and all are welcome to participate!
